  • Cycling Update: Clare Mount host learn-to-ride training session for local primary schools

    Thu 26 Sep 2019 K. Byrne

On Friday 20th September, we welcomed 24 teachers and coaches to Clare Mount for a brilliant training course called 'Ready Set Ride.' In doing so, we became the first school this year to deliver the programme, sponsored by HSBC bank, which aims to help over 400 local children learn the hugely important life-skill of cycling.

Cycling is one of the top-5 most popular participation activities in the UK and the benefits to physical health, mental health, social cohesion and the environment are well-proven yet sadly, 50% of young people in the country reach the age of 8 without learning how to ride. At Clare Mount, we are doing our bit to improve this situation. We are delighted to have recently purchased a bike trailer that will enable us to take our students out into local parks and the community to ride safely.

On Friday, we were assisted by the year 3 pupils from our wonderful partner school, Orret's Meadow who had great fun practising skills and trying out new activities on our fleet of balance bikes.

  • Marks and Spencer 'Sunflower Lanyard Scheme'

    Thu 26 Sep 2019 D.Taylor

Recently, whilst working with a local Marks and Spencer store to set up a scheme of work for our sixth form, Miss Vicars was introduced to the 'Sunflower Lanyard scheme' in store. The lanyard, when worn, alerts staff to ask if they can help as they think that the person may struggle to ask for themselves if they have communication problems.

Marks and Spencer say 'The introduction of the sunflower lanyards is part of M&S’s ambition to be the most accessible retailer, both in-store and online. The sunflower lanyard scheme helps people with hidden disabilities which aren’t always obvious – such as autism, dementia and visual or hearing impairments. When a customer optionally wears a lanyard it’s a discreet signal to store colleagues that they may need a little extra support when shopping.'

We think it's a great idea and one that we wanted to share with the wider community.

  • School governor takes on Mount Kilimanjiro for charity

    Thu 26 Sep 2019 D. Taylor

One of our school governors, Mr Vaughan, has decided to take on the challenge of climbing Mount Kilimanjiro in order to raise funds for Inclusively Taekwondo (ITKD). ITKD has been on offer at Clare Mount's community sports night for many years and is something that Mr Vaughan's son Sam has enjoyed and found great success in. Mr Vaughan said, 'On 19th October I am undertaking the challenge of a 9 day trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjiro. Albeit this is a bucket list challenge, I have decided to raise some funds for Inclusively Taekwondo. As you know, ITKD has been part of the Community Sports Night at our school. Sam accessed ITKD through attending the course at Clare Mount over three years ago and his confidence and social skills have improved vastly as a result and he is only two gradings away from achieving a black belt. It is a great charity that provides access to martial arts for adults and children with disabilities that would normally be hard to reach.'

If you would like to support Mr Vaughan with a donation please go to his Just Giving page at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/christian-vaughan?utm_term=rP2mNRaZp

    Good luck Mr Vaughan

  • My Personal Best theme of the week: Honesty

    Tue 24 Sep 2019 K.Byrne

This weeks theme of the week is 'Honesty'. We have discussed with some of our students what honesty might mean and here's what they have come up with.

    Honesty means:

    1. Being truthful to others.

    2. Being truthful to yourself.

    3. Doing what's right, no matter who is there to see it.

    4. Being someone others can trust.

During form times we have been playing the two truths and a lie game to try and spot when people are being dishonest.

We have also talked about what some of the consequences could be for not being honest. To do this we have been watching the following film. 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf'.
