  • Clare Mount PE dept. host Wirral teach meet

    Wed 13 Feb 2019 K. Byrne

On 13th February, Mr Stanley, as part of his role as Lead Practitioner for PE with The Youth Sport Trust (YST), and the Schools, Students and Teachers Network (SSAT) hosted a ‘teach-meet’ for PE teachers and primary school teachers across Wirral. 40 professionals attended. The idea of a teach-meet is for teachers and other staff and volunteers to discuss new approaches to teaching, new qualifications available to young people and more importantly, it is an opportunity for teachers to ‘network’ and offer support to each other.

The afternoon was a big success with:

87% of attendees rating it good or excellent

93% of attendees describing the network table facilitators as good or excellent and

100% of attendees stating that they would attend any future such events.

Network tables were led by 5 Clare Mount staff; Mr Gavin, Mr Stanley, Mr White, Mrs Poynton and Mrs Corcoran and by 5 invited experts from Edsential CIC, The Youth Sport Trust and Military Style Education.

  • The Fit Fun Fest @ Clare Mount

    Mon 04 Feb 2019 K. Byrne
On 29th January, Clare Mount SSC hosted its first ever 'Fit Fun Fest!' The event, designed and coordinated by our School Games Organiser, Mrs. Corcoran saw 66 young people from 3 of our partner primary schools; Orret's Meadow, Lingham and Holy Spirit come together to have fun and learn some new sports and activities. Each participant experienced some trampolining, box-fit, tennis and zumba and they were helped to enjoy the activities by our brilliant 6th form sports leaders and volunteers, our PE teachers Mr Stanley and Mrs Poynton and our partner coaches; Gemma Rigby from @KidsfitWirral and Chris Thelwall from Prenton Tennis Club. At the end of the afternoon, Mrs Corcoran awarded 6 youngsters a 'Spirit of the Games' award for showing outstanding honesty, teamwork, passion, determination, self-belief and respect! This is the first of 3 Fit Fun Fests planned this year and judging by the response to this one they're set to become a regular feature of Clare Mount's 'outreach' programme in future years.
  • Introducing Kin-Ball

    Fri 01 Feb 2019 K. Byrne
On Thursday 24th September, The Healthy Lifestyle Champions (HLCs) all participated in an introduction to the brilliant sport of Kin-Ball, expertly delivered by Kin-Ball UK's Ryan Joe Martindale at The Hive Youth Zone in Birkenhead.  Kin-Ball, is a team sport created in Quebec, Canada in 1986 in which the main distinctive characteristics are the big size of the ball (1.22 meters in diameter) and that the matches are played by three teams at the same time instead of traditional one-vs-one like most team games. The International Kin-Ball Federation counts 3.8 million participants, primarily from Canada, the U.S., Japan, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Spain, Germany, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Malaysia and China. The newest country is the UK. Kin-Ball UK formed in 2018. Our Healthy Lifestyle Champions, who have the aim of introducing new sports to the students at Clare Mount and our local primary schools first spotted Kin-Ball on You-Tube before Christmas and immediately said 'we'd love to learn that; it looks like fun!' and they weren't wrong. The sport is brilliant at introducing the concepts of collaboration and tactics because you can only be successful if you all work together as a team to catch the ball. The HLCs will be introducing the sport to other youngsters through our Fit Fun Fests, PE lessons and Community Sport Night.
