Student wins presitgious YST award

Clare Mount Students have an awesome time at Calvert Trust
Wed 15 Mar 2017Last week 34 of our students and some staff took a week long trip to Keswick in the Lake District. Whilst there students were invited to take part in many different challenging activities which included building a camp fire, sailing canoes on open water, climbing rocks and climbing walls, using a zip wire, ghyll scrambling, riding horses, hiking and swimming. Every one of the students challenged themselves personally and should be proud of the great achievements that they accomplished. Well done everyone.

Clare Mount organises YST Step into Sport Conference
Mon 13 Mar 2017Merseyside Youth Sport Trust Step into Sport Conference held at Greenbank Sports Academy, Liverpool on Thursday 9th March 2017.
94 delegates attended aged between 12 and 17 (45% of the young leaders had a Special Educational Need or Disability) from 11 secondary schools from all over Merseyside:
· Maricourt Catholic High School,
· Lansbury Bridge School and Sports College,
· Clare Mount Specialist Sports College,
· St. Julies Catholic High School,
· St. Augustine of Canterbury Catholic High School,
· Meols Cop High School,
· Bebington High School Sports College
· Woodchurch High School,
· Archbishop Beck Sports College,
· Meadowside School,
· Litherland High School.
All accessed 8 workshops in:
· Pride Sport LGBT Diversity Training
· LSSP Young Leaders Training,
· Greenbank Power Hockey Coaching,
· Palmerston School LSSP Leaders Matball Session,
· YST Young Athlete Role Model Training,
· YST Lead2Employability and Volunteering Workshop.
· Kinball Demonstration session at lunchtime.
The conference itself was organised by Youth Sport Trust Lead Inclusion School for Merseyside, Clare Mount Specialist Sports College in partnership with Greenbank Sports Academy, Local School Sport Partnership Managers and School Games Organisers in Southport, Sefton, Wirral, St. Helens and North, Central and South Liverpool.
All young people came away from the conference enthused about how leadership, coaching and volunteering opportunities can help them with their employability profile. All young people attending spoke the inspirational leadership skills shown by Palmerston School’s young people (trained by Jess McNally of LSSP, based at Archbishop Beck Sports College). All of whom have challenges with literacy and numeracy but have demonstrated that young people with a SEND must have access to leadership, coaching and volunteering pathways.

Following the day, Ruben as a member of the beb school sport organising committee is going to take some inclusive sports ideas to the table for our inter house calendar next year.

Conference organiser and Inclusion Lead Jon White said:
“Having been to Sardinia last October with my colleague Dan Keefe and seeing how sport can be a tool for diversity we were really keen to showcase workshops in inclusive PE and sport and diversity at this year’s conference. We were delighted to offer young people sessions on creating a welcoming environment in their leadership sessions and an app for tracking leadership on their phones.
Our athlete role model was Rio 2016 Paralympic Footballer Ollie Nugent from Irby, Wirral who spoke about the power of sport to change lives. Broadgreen International School student Ben Meadows (who was our YST Young Athlete Role Model in 2016) assisted him in Ambassador Duties. The venue as always was inspirational and some of the young people indicated that they would be interested in volunteering for Special Olympics and disability sport at Greenbank Sports Academy. We were delighted with the high quality of the people delivering the workshops; all of whom come with massive experience and work with national organisations who are leading in their field.
Palmerston School’s young people inspired us all. We were delighted as the conference theme was ‘Not About Without Us’. Feedback has been really positive and we hope the young people have seen the value of sport volunteering in improving their CVs ready for university, work or apprenticeships.”

BBC North West Tonight coming to Clare Mount 16th March
Fri 10 Mar 2017It has been confirmed that a camera crew from the BBC will be coming to cover our Media work on BBC School Report News Day next Thursday 16th March. They will be speaking to some students as well as showcasing work. We should appear on the North West programmes throughout the day.

Clare Mount organises the 1st UK School Sport Education Games
Wed 08 Mar 2017Inspired by our experience at the Whole School Sport Education Games in Greece last year, Clare Mount has worked with the Youth Sport Trust, Special Olympics GB, The NCSS, The Wenlock Olympian Society, Wheelpower Sports, Stoke Mandeville, William Brookes School and Basketball England to organise the 1st UK School Sport Education Games, 6th - 7th March 2017. Split across 2-days and 2-venues - Stoke Mandeville and Much Wenlock - the event was designed to 'inspire a generation' of young people to spread the word about Unified Play and our rich Olympic, Paralympic and Special Olympic History. Special thanks to our wonderful speakers - Paralympian Kate Grey, Special Olympic athlete Georgina Maton, NCSS Chair Pam Burrage and Chris Cannon from the Wenlock Olympian Society. The event was attened by 40 young people with and without special educational needs from 7 schools including Clare Mount, Bebington, Lord Grey, Slated Row, Arbour Vale, Kenilworth and William Brookes School all of which demonstrated the Olympic/Paralympic values over the range of talks, tours and sporting activities. Let's hope this becomes an annual event. "BE INSPIRED".
