Clare Mount's African Adventure 2024
This year the teachers at Clare Mount Specialist Sports College have teamed up with African Adventures, to offer a once in a lifetime experience for our pupils.
African Adventures is an award-winning travel company that has been organising life-changing trips for young people in the UK since 2009. The mission of this company is to change lives through volunteering. Many UK secondary schools have been on volunteering expeditions to Africa, to offer life-changing experiences for their pupils.
African Adventures are thrilled to collaborate with Clare Mount Specialist Sports College, as we will be their first ever special school to take part.
On 3rd February 2024, Clare Mount Specialist Sports College are taking 15 pupils, on an eight-night expedition to Kenya, to volunteer in a Kenyan school. During this time, the pupils and staff will be hard at work, volunteering to teach their pupils, build a new classroom and deliver sports activities to the new friends they will have made.
All of the missions are designed to contribute to long-term, sustainable development projects in East Africa. As you can imagine this is an expensive excursion, but the staff at Clare Mount Specialist Sports College are dedicated to fundraising for this event, to keep the cost as low as possible, so it is inclusive to all pupils who are invited.
The cost per pupil is £2,000, therefore the fundraising target is £30,000. African Adventures is a non-profit organisation and so all money raised will go towards supporting the Kenyan school. Our mission is to deliver an outstanding volunteering project, that will benefit pupils from Clare Mount Specialist Sports College and also pupils in our partnered Kenyan school. Our vision is to use the power of ethical and responsible volunteering to change lives of young people in the UK and in Africa.
At Clare Mount Specialist Sports College, pupils understand how lucky they are to have the right to an outstanding education, but sadly this is not the case for many other children around the world. In Kenya, 45% of people live below the poverty line. Kenya is home to one of the biggest slums in the world and the area we will visit in Kenya is home to approximately 2.5 million people who live in over 200 settlement slums. The settlement is overcrowded and underserviced. Most families living there are packed into windowless, one-room 12ft x 12ft shacks, with mud walls, a corrugated tin roof and a dirt or concrete floor, accommodating up to eight people or more with many sleeping on the floor. We will be visiting these areas and delivering clothes, food and money to support as many families as we can. For children in this area, the biggest hope is to attend school. Many children cannot afford an education, so we are going to work with a community-run school which offers children a better future.
If you are able to sponsor Clare Mount Specialist Sports College, no matter how big or small your donation, the pupils and staff would be extremely grateful for your tremendously kind generosity. Please know that you will be making a huge difference to the lives of disadvantaged children and families in Kenya, whilst also providing Clare Mount pupils with a life-changing volunteering opportunity, to collaborate and share a unique global educational experience.
