  • YOUNG HEALTH AMBASSADORS

    Mon 16 Oct 2017 D. Keefe

The health and well-being of pupils at Clare Mount is a key priority for the school. This year we are involves in lots of exciting initiatives including Chimp Management, Active Maths and Resilience Doughnut training for staff, as well as piloting the Youth Sport Award in Year 9 and the COPE programme with a few pupils in Year 9 and 10. To help us achieve our goal of ‘happy, healthy’ pupils at Clare Mount a group of pupils in Year 10 and 11 visited The University of Lancaster in September to access training on how to become a Young Health Ambassador. This pilot scheme involving 20 schools in the North West involved training around promoting physical activity, leadership and healthy food messages. Some sessions were led by GB athlete mentors from Thai boxing and Badminton with the main message of “don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something”. The Young Health Ambassadors have already started the process of supporting lunchtime clubs, such as Sale Sharks tag rugby sessions, and are planning a ‘hoops for health’ inspiration day before Christmas involving instructors from the Underground Training Station and former NBA Basketball player David Aliu. Get up and get active!!!

  • CLARE MOUNT PUPILS ACT AS KIT CARRIERS AT LONDON 2017

    Mon 16 Oct 2017 D. Keefe

During the Summer holidays 13 pupils and staff had the enormous honour of acting as kit carriers (so called “Runners”) at the World Championship Athletics in London between the 4th and 8th August 2017. We had the chance to rub shoulders with the best athletes in the World, watch how they prepare for events in the warm-up track, the tension in the call-room, and the excitement of the kit collection zone. What an experience!!!

  • Give it your Max

    Mon 16 Oct 2017 D. Keefe

Clare Mount has been working for a few years with The Youth Sport Trust and Tennis Foundation to inspire young people through the Beyond the Baseline programme which has seen athlete mentors come to school to teach pupils through the values of tennis and resulted in pupils going on trips to places like Wimbledon. Most recently, pupils transitioning from Hayfield have enjoyed tennis sessions with former GB player Anna Fitzpatrick in school.

Now the Tennis Foundation, working in conjunction with Bidston Sports and Tennis Centre, has approached Clare Mount to become a Give It Your Max hub-school. This will involve access to more athlete mentors with former GB player Jade Windley already in the diary to appear at a launch event at Clare Mount on the 9th November. The Give It Your Max programme will also see training for school staff, with Inclusive Tennis CPD planned for the 14th November, as well as coaching in local schools, inclusive tennis festivals and new inclusive tennis coaching sessions at Bidston Tennis Centre on Mondays after-school in the Summer Term. Game, set and match!!!

  • EXTREME SPORT HUB GETS INTO THE COMMUNITY

    Mon 16 Oct 2017 D. Keefe

EXTREME SPORT HUB GETS INTO THE COMMUNITY

The Extreme Sport Hub ran a second experience day in September 2017, however, this time we listened closely to the views and opinions of young people themselves. Talking to various focus groups we responded to the ideas of young people that they would like to see the extreme sports on offer delivered in a community setting, rather than school setting, and that they also wanted a mix of extreme sport experiences complimented by other sports they could do in the community. Subsequently, the event was hosted at The Hive Youth Zone. 50 youngsters from local primary and secondary schools had the chance to be inspired by European skateboarding champion Neil Danns, World in-line skating Champion Jenna Downing, but also to step into the boxing zone in the new facility. After a great day, all got flyers from The Hive in the hope they will continue to access sport in the community.

    BIKE MECHANICS WORKSHOPS CONTINUE

Yet more thanks to Kate Hughes and The Peter Johnson Foundation who continue to provide funding for Geoff and Phil from Pedal Zone to offer a bike mechanics learners programme on Wednesday afternoon at school. The programme runs for 20 weeks each year and ensure that not only our bikes well looked after but that pupils can service bikes themselves. Following on from his experiences last year Tom secured employment at Off the Rocks bike repair shop, whilst Jordan is doing a similar work experience this year.

A SMILE FOR A CHILD DONATION:

Major thanks to Mick Hoban and Chris Read from A Smile for A Child. Chris supported the school last year to raise money for our New MUGA, sports wheelchairs and bikes, and this year has put us in touch with Mick who has raised £1000 doing a triathlon in memory of a friend. “I am delighted to be making this donation to Clare Mount to support the excellent work you are doing. My own daughter, now 27, has autism so I know how much benefit such donations can make”. A group of Year 10 pupils have decided the money will be spent on new boxing gloves and a speed ball, as well as more KO8 strength and conditioning bands.

Sale Sharks Community Trust has been circling around Clare Mount this term attracted by the potential rugby talent in the school. Henry in Post-16 has recently joined their disability squad and is doing work experience with the club to help them unearth more talent in the North West and set up a mixed ability programme at Port Sunlight on a Thursday evening. For more information contact Vicky.irwin@salesharks.com. Vicky, the Inclusion Officer, has been delivering part of a 12 week coaching programme at Clare Mount working with our Year 10 sports leaders and P-16 pupils as well as running a lunchtime club for other years. 15 lucky pupils and staff had the opportunity to go to watch the Sale V Gloucester Game, with tickets donated by Printerland. Pupils got to do a Q&A with Sale player Josh Charnley before the game, with Sale winning convincingly by 57-10. Just as impressive, our pupils (minus some of our regular team) played a game against the Oakwood Academy on the pitch at half time drawing an excellent contest 3 tries all. Well done to all those involved. On the 18th October we return to the AJ Bell Stadium for a coaching session with Sale Director of Rugby Steve Diamond which will be filmed by BT Sport.

As part of a shared ambition to promote inclusiveness and help bring rugby to new audiences, Printerland.co.uk - one of Sale Sharks' valued partners - invited pupils from two schools for children with Special Educational Needs to attend last Friday's Premiership clash with Gloucester.

In total, 34 pupils came along to the AJ Bell Stadium for what was an unforgettable experience with 17 attending from Oakwood Academy in Eccles and 17 coming from Wirral's Clare Mount Specialist Sports College.

After taking part in a pre-match question and answer session with Sale Sharks winger Josh Charnley, the youngsters were then invited onto the AJ Bell Stadium pitch at half-time for game of tag rugby on the AJ Bell Stadium pitch before posing for a group picture in front of the Printerland.co.uk Family stand.
