  • Clare Mount goes ‘Active in Mind’

    Wed 18 Jul 2018 B. Gavin

On Tuesday 17th July, a group of Key Stage 3 pupils were lucky enough to take part in an ‘Active in Mind’ celebration event at Clare Mount. ‘Active in Mind’ is a health initiative from the Youth Sport Trust which aims to improve young people’s mental health through increasing their levels of physical activity.

The 20 6th Form Sports Leaders who were trained as mentors as part of this programme have been sacrificing their own lunch times every Tuesday so they could lead a group of Key Stage 3 pupils in various sports and games. The most popular sports turned out to be dodge ball, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair dodge ball.

To finish the programme off for the year, our Athlete Mentor Neil Danns (Former British and European Skateboard Champion), returned to Clare Mount to watch the 6th Form Sports Leaders deliver a carousel activities. The Sports Leaders should be extremely proud of themselves for showing their passion for sport and demonstrate the maturity required to lead a younger group of pupils.

A special thanks to Sarah O’Connell, Jack Walker and Amelia Robinson who have been the most dedicated leaders throughout the year.

Well done to all the pupils who have attended at least one of the ‘Active in Mind sessions during the year, and we hope to see you again next year! A special mention to Ellis, George, Cole, Max B, Brandon, Bailey, Matthew, Ryan and Ethan for almost never missing a session!

  • Clare Mount County Runners Up as Cricket (almost!) Comes Home

Thu 12 Jul 2018 Paul Kearney

We travelled to Warrington for the Annual County Tournament. The squad of Reeve (captain), Kierran, Dennis, Philip, George, Sam, John and Lewis were drawn in a tough group with Hebden Green, Oaklands and Springfield

The first game saw Clare Mount buck the usual trend and start strongly with a comfortable 11 run win over Hebden Green. Our second game was against Oaklands and saw John star with the bat with a passable impression of Chris Gayle smashing the ball to all parts, ably supported by Dennis and the elegant Goweresque batting of Sam. The boys prevailed by 30 runs in good style.

Our final game was against a more senior side from Springfield and their coach who had them drilled to be ultra competitive. In a shortened game we went down by 11 runs with Kierran and Lewis steady performers in this game and George and Philip showing their true cricket values by fielding for the opposition when they were short.

We won our group and time constraints meant that the county champions were decided from the group records rather than a final and so we were denied a shoot out with the other group winners, instead participating in a thrilling tied exhibition game at the end of the afternoon

As you will see from the photos, the boys thoroughly enjoyed their day and it is my honour to be their manager. Reeve was an excellent captain on the day and is a shining example to the younger players. Thanks to all who have helped this year and special thanks to Mrs Manifold who drove the bus for us.
