  • Clare Mount Scoops National Mental Health in Schools Award

    Thu 18 Mar 2021 KB

    Press Release: March 18th 2021

A Wirral school has achieved the School Mental Health Award, which is delivered by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools. Clare Mount Specialist Sports College has been awarded the Gold standard for its outstanding mental health and wellbeing provision.

Clare Mount becomes the first Wirral school to be awarded the prestigious Mental Health in Schools Award at gold level. The award acknowledges Clare Mount's whole-school approach to mental health and the school has been judged as 'excelling' in the areas of leadership and management; structure, organisation and support for staff and students, parent / carer engagement, work with external agencies and professional development and learning.

Clare Mount provides a wide range of activities to boost the wellbeing of pupils and staff, including an annual wellbeing week, termly wellbeing days, full-time staff dedicated to supporting young people experiencing poor mental health and a range of activities to support the wellbeing of staff.

The school is also a founder member of both the North West Healthy Futures network and the national ‘Well-Schools’ movement

Clare Mount head teacher Kim Webster said: “I am so pleased for every member of our very special community that the support, care and respect that we all have for each other is recognised through this award.” “The award process has helped us to look closely at all our school systems and make changes that ensure we will continue to be a happy, healthy community for years to come.”

A focal point of the school’s mental health and wellbeing provision is working closely with parents / carers, especially as Clare Mount’s students begin their time at school in year 7. All decisions about school policy and practice are made with the wellbeing of the students at heart.

Mrs Webster said: “The whole Clare Mount community understands that their primary, collective role is in ensuring that all members of the community feel safe, settled and happy. The effect that ALL policy and practice has on this is at the forefront of everyone’s mind at times of change and external pressure. Staff and students alike are proud to be members of the Clare Mount community and are determined that the schools remains a happy place to work and learn.”

The award was established in 2017 by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools – part of Leeds Beckett University – and social enterprise Minds Ahead.

The Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools aims to strengthen pupils’ mental health by supporting schools to make a positive change at all levels of the UK's education system, improving students’ outcomes and life chances.

Professor Damien Page, Dean of Leeds Beckett’s Carnegie School of Education, said: “Achieving this award is not just recognition of a whole-school approach to mental health, it’s a recognition of the school’s commitment to improving the life chances of children.

“We’re truly proud to have worked with Clare Mount in this vital work and look forward to further collaboration.”

Nationally, more than 600 schools have signed up to take part in the mental health award.

Dean Johnstone, founder and CEO of Minds Ahead said: “This award shines a light on the excellent work schools are doing to promote mental health for their community of children and adults.

“It is thrilling and humbling to learn about Clare Mount and the many other schools engaged in the quality award process. I’d like to offer my congratulations on this deserved recognition.”

  • Wellbeing Week Mark 2 a Resounding Success

    Sun 14 Mar 2021 KB / CC-S
Since returning in January, many of our students have attended school full time, whilst all the others have been learning from home. Last week saw a return to school for ALL our students and so, in order to help us all return to school life, our main focus was on wellbeing. So many activities took place (too numerous to list) including walking, drawing, social games, reading for pleasure, quizzes and so much more. Towards the end of the week, our 6th form took it on themselves to get creative and the results were amazing. Have a look at our fabulous gallery below!
  • A new 'direction' for Clare Mount PE!

    Fri 12 Mar 2021 KB

Orienteering is a fantastic activity because it takes learning outdoors and it's great fun!

Whilst having fun, participants (of all ages) develop spatial awareness, leadership, problem-solving and communication skills.

Orienteering also helps young people to explore and connect with nature.

Earlier today, Darren from local company; Enrich Education installed Clare Mount's permanent orienteering course. This follows staff training earlier in the week and we are excited to have received some fantastic resources to go alongside the course, including ordnance survey-style maps and compasses for the students to use in lessons.

The course will see a lot of use over the coming weeks/months/years as it forms part of the school's PE, 'forest-school' and science curricula.

Corey and Bobby are giving it their full endorsement!

  • Year 9 Get Creative for Wellbeing!

    Wed 10 Mar 2021 KB / AW

9WA have been using the first full week back at school to get creative in their wellbeing time! Everyone has been making making planters using recyclable materials including milk cartons and discarded wooden objects! They've been developing fantastic and valuable skills such as sanding and gluing wood, painting and decorating and ultimately they've filed their planters with tulips and lavender! A real team effort with some great results!

  • Year 11 Prepare the School Garden for Sunnier Times Ahead!

    Wed 10 Mar 2021 KB / SBa

Learning Outside The Classroom is important to the staff and students at Clare Mount; not least because it's great fun but...did you know....

Gardening requires children to practice and hone in on their fine motor skills. Planting seeds, scooping dirt and watering plants all help to improve motor skills, which can in turn help to improve their concentration and learning capabilities!

Today, 11Ba have been prepping our kitchen-garden ready for the vegetable crops we hope to plant out when Jack Frost has waved goodbye!

Well done to all students and staff!

  • Students end lockdown with a Forest School Fiesta!

    Fri 05 Mar 2021 KB

Today was (hopefully) the last day of lockdown and, before we welcome our students back in full on Monday, Mr Jones, Mrs Badzire, Miss Willis and Mr Holsgrove laid on a brilliant day for our Year 8 students as they learnt how to start fires using flint and steel and toasted their own marshmallows.

Working in the outdoors has so many benefits: Here are just a couple:

    • Confidence: children have the freedom, time and space to learn and demonstrate independence.
    • Social skills: children gain increased awareness of the consequences of their actions on peers through team activities such as sharing tools and participating in play.

Mr Jones, Mr Rain and Mrs Glover have been working hard behind the scenes preparing our school site for more Forest School fun in the future; we hope to have these activities embedded in our curriculum come September 2021.

Year 8 definitely gave the thumbs-up today!
