The Preparation for Adulthood curriculum has been designed to ensure that young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities can make informed choices about individual lifestyles and future opportunities. Preparation for Adulthood will help teach our pupils the skills to build and maintain positive relationships with those around them and the community they live in. The curriculum aims to enhance personal confidence, independence and critical thinking so that pupils can stay safe, contribute to society, participate in purposeful activities and thrive into adulthood.

Careers Education
As part of their Preparation for Adulthood lessons, every year group will complete one 6 week unit of Careers Education contributing to the Gatsby Benchmarks. During this unit of work pupils will have the opportunity to use the CEIAG software programme, Xello. This programme is used with students from Year 9 upwards to help identify careers and industries they may be interested in and then provide guidance and practical steps showing how to reach their career goals.
Year 11 pupils will also complete a week long Work Experience Placement in Term 2a arranged in collaboration with the Careers Lead, Work Experience Co-ordinator, Teaching staff and Parents. Opportunities for relevant work experience ensure the skills and abilities that students have acquired are practically applied in preparation for future employment.
The curriculum also includes cross curricular links to core skills such as Literacy, Maths, RSHE and Computing. Some examples are included below:
Literacy – Vocabulary lists for each year group, reading and written tasks, comprehension, research
Maths – money skills, budgeting, time, problem solving
RHSE – friendships, work colleagues, family relationships, romantic relationships, health and hygiene, first aid, mental health coping strategies, keeping safe in different environments
Computing – online safety, use of social media, phishing, online banking, fake media, sharing of personal information, online privacy
Preparation for Adulthood lessons have a meaningful impact on students by helping them build the confidence and skills needed for life beyond school.
Through activities such as college visits, students gain first-hand experience of higher education environments, allowing them to envision their future and make informed choices about their next steps.
Life skills lessons—covering areas like budgeting, cooking, communication, and time management—equip students with practical knowledge they can apply in everyday situations. Together, these experiences help students feel more prepared and self-assured as they approach adulthood, supporting a smoother transition into further education, employment, or independent living.
