    Intent

“Science is in every aspect of our lives. It helps us to answer our biggest questions and to meet our most basic needs: from explaining the deepest mysteries of the universe to the structure of elementary particles that form atoms. The findings of science have fundamentally shaped every aspect of our world. Science drives innovation, creating new knowledge to help us solve current and future problems.”

(Finding the optimum: the science subject report. Gov.uk 2/2/2023)

With this in mind, at Clare Mount we want to help students foster a curiosity for the world around us and to develop the skills to answer questions as to how and why things happen.

Through our teaching of Science, we aim to ensure that all students:

    • Understand that Science affects every aspect of our lives and the World around us
    • Can use observational skills to answer questions about the World around us
    • Can recall and apply knowledge to answer questions about the World around us
    • Develop scientific skills through first- hand practical experiences
    • Relate learning to the ‘Big Ideas’ of Science Education.

    Implementation

In Key Stage 3 students have 2 lessons of Science per week and are taught on a topic basis.

In Year 7 students receive a gradual introduction to Science and an appropriate transition to working in the labs for our ASC students. The students are base-lined during the first term to enable suitable targets to be set and progress monitored.

Where possible classes are taught by specialist Science teachers. If a class is taught by a non- specialist they are supported by a specialist teacher to ensure we deliver high quality Science lessons.

In Key Stage 4 most students will have 3 lessons per week- one Biology, one Chemistry and one Physics following the Pearson Edexcel GCSE Combined Science course which leads to 2 GCSE’s.

Students who particularly enjoy Science can opt to take extra Science and so follow the Pearson Edexcel Separate Science route aiming for 3 GCSE’s in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

For those student’s who struggle to access GCSE course we offer the Pearson Edexcel Entry Level Science course and/ or our own bespoke Horticulture or Practical Science course.

We believe this approach were courses offered can be tailored to the needs of specific cohorts contributes towards Clare Mount’s vision of the CHILD being central to all we do.

    Impact

As a result of our Science teaching at Clare Mount, we have students who:

    • Confidently and safely handle Scientific equipment
    • Have ambitious but realistic targets for the end of each Key Stage
    • Identify and ask for help to support and progress their learning
    • Link their Science learning to the Big Ideas in Science and to the World around us.
    • Discuss and explain their learning
