    Intent

At Clare Mount, we aim to provide all our pupils with meaningful and accessible geographical and historical learning experiences that broaden their knowledge and deepen their understanding of the world around them. Our curriculum is designed with our learners in mind, ensuring that pupils with ASC and additional needs are supported to engage, question and explore in ways that suit their individual learning styles.

We want our pupils to become curious about people, places and events. By studying Geography, pupils will develop their knowledge of physical features such as mountains, rivers and oceans, as well as human geography, including the impact people have on the environment and the importance of sustainability. Through History, pupils will learn about significant people, places and events from the past, and how these continue to shape our world today.

Our intent is to give every pupil opportunities to build resilience, independence and critical thinking skills, while encouraging respect, tolerance and compassion. We want pupils to feel a strong sense of their own place in history and geography, as well as their role in shaping the future.

    Implementation

Humanities is taught through carefully planned topics that are accessible, engaging a GCSE pathway that builds on prior learning, with clear structure, repetition and visual supports to aid understanding. Lessons are adapted to meet a wide range of learning needs, using strategies such as scaffolding, sensory approaches and practical tasks.

We provide opportunities for pupils to develop key skills such as enquiry, map reading, analysing evidence and making comparisons. Visits, fieldwork and hands-on experiences are central to our approach, as they allow pupils to make real-life connections to their learning in a way that is concrete and meaningful.

Teachers use a range of strategies to support ASC learners, including visual timetables, chunked tasks, clear routines and opportunities for overlearning. Group and individual work ensures that pupils can learn at their own pace and celebrate success in a supportive environment.

    Impact

By the end of KS4, pupils at Clare Mount will have developed a broad and balanced understanding of
both Geography and History. They will:

    • Recognise how people and places are connected across time and space.
    • Understand how past decisions and events affect our lives today.
    • Develop awareness of environmental issues and consider their role in sustainable futures.
    • Build skills in questioning, critical thinking and empathy.
    • Achieve nationally recognised qualifications (where appropriate) that prepare them for their next steps in education, training or employment.

Most importantly, our pupils will leave Clare Mount with a sense of curiosity and confidence about
the wider world, and with the knowledge and skills to participate actively in society.
