    Intent

At the heart of our Design & Technology curriculum is the belief that students deserve a subject which prepares them for the world they live in, supports their individual needs, and enables them to make sustained progress. D&T empowers young people with the practical skills, critical thinking, and creativity needed to engage positively with the designed and technological world around them.

Our curriculum is rooted in real-world relevance. It aims to inspire learners to understand how products and systems are developed, how design influences our daily lives, and how to use both traditional and modern technologies (including CAD/CAM) to innovate and improve the world around them. We provide students with a broad and balanced foundation in Key Stage 3 that covers materials, construction, electronics, digital design, and systems thinking.

We believe in cultivating confident, resilient learners who take creative risks, problem-solve independently, and work collaboratively. D&T bridges subjects such as mathematics, science, engineering, art, computing, geography, and business studies, giving students a rich and interconnected learning experience. Literacy is embedded through analysis, annotation, and evaluation tasks that develop students’ ability to communicate effectively and critically.

    Implementation

In Key Stage 3, pupils build knowledge and skills through practical, hands-on learning and experimentation. Each year group follows a carefully sequenced program that builds confidence and competence across key technology areas. Students are exposed to a variety of materials, tools, processes, and techniques in dedicated teaching environments with access to manufacturing equipment and digital technologies.

We create opportunities for students to learn through making, by exploring, testing, failing, and improving. Lessons encourage creativity and purposeful experimentation, giving pupils time to master core skills while learning how to adapt and respond to design challenges. Students develop their material knowledge and practical confidence through a range of exciting projects such as Memphis-style clocks, spinning toys, mechanical toys, or LED lights.

At Key Stage 4, students specialise in a chosen D&T pathway that reflects their interests and potential career aspirations. The curriculum offers deeper exploration of user-centered design, sustainability, real-world problems, and professional practice. Students develop independent project work, apply iterative design processes, and create high-quality final outcomes supported by meaningful research and detailed design development. They gain the confidence to evaluate their work and reflect on their progress as emerging designers.

Staff across the department model a passion for design and learning. We support whole-school events, such as set design for performances and the school prom, demonstrating the real-life application of our subject. We also continue to develop our own subject knowledge and expertise through CPD and professional networks to ensure the teaching of D&T remains relevant, inspiring, and forward-thinking.

    Impact

The impact of our D&T curriculum is clear: students develop as creative thinkers, problem solvers, and skilled makers. They leave our subject with a toolbox of life skills, from teamwork and resilience to technical competence and critical evaluation. Our pupils understand the importance of design in improving lives and shaping a better future.

Many go on to pursue further education or apprenticeships in design, engineering, construction, architecture, or digital media. Others use the transferable skills gained in D&T to succeed in a wide range of careers. Ultimately, our aim is to develop resourceful, innovative, and capable citizens who are well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities of life beyond school.
