Clare Mount's curriculum is designed to be adaptable and so ensure that the individual needs of every student are met.
Our focus in Year 7 is to ensure a successful transition from primary school, so that students are able to bring with them previous knowledge and skills and learn to apply them in a different setting. In the Autumn Term, time is taken to 'baseline' assess our students; with teachers identifying all our Year 7 students' strengths and 'where they are at' so that aspirational targets and progression steps can be planned.
The Key Stage 3 curriculum incorporates literacy, numeracy, interpersonal, citizenship and employability skills alongside academic subjects appropriate to the needs of secondary-aged students, in line with the National Curriculum. All students have weekly lessons in English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, RE, ICT, PE (including swimming in year 7), PSHE, Languages, Performing Arts and Preparation for Adulthood (PFA). Additionally, they are taught Food Studies, Design Technology, Art and Learning Outside the Classroom (Forest Schools) as part of a 'carousel' (i.e. weekly double lessons for a short 7-9 week period each year)
The Key Stage 4 curriculum offers access to a wide range of aspirational qualifications to our students, helping them to make the next step into further education or training. We are now able to offer a 'pathway' for each student based on strengths and aspirations, further ensuring that all students can enjoy and achieve at Key Stage 4, while recognising the ongoing challenges our young people face, day to day.
GCSEs (or equivalent) Offered: Mathematics, English Language, English Literature, Science, Geography, History, French, Design Technology, Art, Film Studies, PE, Drama, Music, Food Studies
Other qualifications offered at Key Stage 4 include certificates in Sports leadership, Duke of Edinburgh Award (up to Silver), Arts Award (Film), Travel and Tourism and a range of Entry Level Qualifications for those students for whom GCSE qualifications are inappropriate. Our students continue to study Personal and Social Development throughout Key Stage 4
Students in our Sixth Form follow a curriculum which enables them to prepare for the adult world, encouraging self-sufficiency and confidence to work successfully within society. There is a Personal and Social Development enrichment programme which empowers our students in readiness for their future lives. Students continue to strive for higher qualifications in English & Maths and have the opportunity to learn new vocational and life skills. Work experience is a very important part of Clare Mount Sixth Form and placements are found for students in the 'world of work' for one day per week for the whole year.
