Religious Education

Intent

At Clare Mount we believe that it is important for all our pupils to learn about religions and in turn, learn from them, so that they have a deeper understanding of the world around them. The aim of RE at Clare mount is to help our children to acquire and develop the knowledge and understanding of Christianity and other world religions that are represented in Great Britain and across the world. We also hope that the students learn to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape life and develop their abilities to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues to enhance their cultural development.

RE plays an important role in promoting social awareness and understanding in our students. We encourage them to ask questions about the world and think deeper about their own beliefs, values and experiences. We want our students to enjoy RE and develop resilient responses to misunderstandings, stereotyping and division. We want to offer the children a place where difficult or ‘risky’ questions can be tackled within a safe but challenging context.

Implementation

All our students at Years 7-9 participate in a weekly RE lesson delivered by an experienced and qualified teacher of RE.

Lessons often involve a mix of activities like discussions, analysing texts and sources, exploring contemporary issues through real-world news stories, and developing personal responses and empathy.

An overriding focus on exploring beliefs, teachings, and practices from different religions and worldviews encourages students to engage with fundamental questions about life's meaning and purpose.

Impact

RE is not currently taught beyond year 9 but our KS3 curriculum enhances our students’ intellectual and personal growth by developing knowledge, critical thinking and empathy, which are crucial for their future lives in a diverse and inclusive society
